Marc Chagall's Love of Flowers

Marc Chagall's love for painting flower bouquets is one of those charming aspects of art history that stick with you.

Chagall painted flowers – including cut bouquets of flowers – throughout his career, both as elements of larger compositions and as standalone works.

I had the honor of encountering them one dreary day in Naples, where a friend and I happened upon an exhibition dedicated to this painter. The exhibition was lovingly curated, with images thematically grouped into different rooms, so viewers could experience them almost as separate events.

The flower room was one of the last of the exhibition, and though Chagall's work is remarkable no matter what form it takes, the vibrancy and energy of the flowers made them the most memorable. They enlivened me, even though it was towards the end of the day. I went from image to image (like a bee), drinking in shape and color and the joy radiating from each painting.
